So I recently heard the US Gov wants to own 50% of major AI companies. Do you know what will happen to the stock price of OpenAI and Anthropic?
Intel is up 5X since the Gov bought 10% in 2025. SpaceX is going to pop when pension funds are forced to buy the stock as part of the Index.
Now I bet you're thinking OpenAI and Anthropic shareholders are going to get filthy rich given the unlimited backstop of the US Government.
That's what I thought for a moment also…
The Catch
If it were true, it would be daylight robbery, corruption and signs of the biggest bubble ever.
But it turns out that the government wants the shares handed over to them as a TAX.
That's right… For FREE LOL!!!
Sam Altman supports the idea of a public wealth fund so society can benefit from the wealth created by AI (a beautiful idea btw).
But now there's talks of grabbing 50% of the stock which would crash the share price. The AI Labs would effectively be nationalized.
Semiconductor stocks would rally though as the AI labs have to buy the chips.
Mixed Feelings
I'm not sure how I feel about this all.
I worry that foreign adversaries will overtake the US if the government impedes progress or investor sentiment is dampened. For anyone thinking about where AI investments are heading, this creates a whole new layer of uncertainty.
At the same time, society should benefit from the enormous wealth creation and AGI is a scary thought so it's probably safer the government controls it.
Final Thoughts
The potential nationalization of AI labs raises real questions about innovation, investment, and who benefits from the AI boom. On one hand, government control could dampen the entrepreneurial spirit that drives startups to become major exits. On the other, maybe society deserves a stake in what could be the most transformative technology ever created.
This debate isn't going away. Whether you're an investor, founder, or just someone watching the AI space, these policy decisions will shape the future of the industry.
